Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Radio remains one of the most accessible forms of media in rural Nigeria, where access to television and the internet may be limited. Radio broadcasts are vital for disseminating information about critical issues such as environmental conservation, as they can reach diverse and widespread audiences. In Dukku Local Government Area, Gombe State, where environmental challenges such as deforestation, soil erosion, and waste management persist, radio stations have been used as platforms for promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices (Nuhu & Musa, 2024). However, while the potential of radio to raise awareness about environmental conservation is widely acknowledged, there is limited empirical research on its actual effectiveness in changing behaviors and promoting environmental sustainability in specific localities like Dukku. This study explores the role of radio broadcasts in promoting environmental conservation, focusing on their effectiveness in influencing attitudes and actions towards environmental protection in Dukku Local Government Area.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of radio as a tool for environmental education in rural Nigeria, the actual effectiveness of radio broadcasts in promoting environmental conservation in Dukku Local Government Area remains unclear. Challenges such as low literacy levels, limited local engagement, and the absence of follow-up actions may hinder the impact of radio-based environmental campaigns. Furthermore, while radio stations in the region may air programs related to conservation, there is a lack of evidence showing whether these programs result in measurable changes in public behavior or contribute to lasting environmental improvements. This study addresses these gaps by assessing how effectively radio broadcasts in Dukku influence local environmental practices and attitudes.

1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the understanding of how radio can be used as an effective tool for environmental education and behavior change in rural communities. The findings will provide valuable insights for radio station managers, environmental NGOs, and policymakers who aim to leverage radio broadcasts for promoting sustainable environmental practices. The research also adds to the growing body of literature on the role of media in environmental education and conservation.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on assessing the effectiveness of radio broadcasts in promoting environmental conservation in Dukku Local Government Area, Gombe State. It is limited to evaluating radio programming and its influence on local environmental behaviors within this specific locality.
